Award for Marketing Excellence
The Tipton Alumni Group of the Greater Sales & Marketing Council Renames Prestigious Industry Award to Honor Marketing Visionary John Martin

In a landmark recognition of two legendary figures in the homebuilding industry, the Tipton Alumni Group of the Greater Sales & Marketing Council (GSMC) of the Building Industry Association of Southern California (BIASC) proudly announces the renaming of its most prestigious honor. After 55 years as the Max Tipton Award for Marketing Excellence, the award will now be known as the Tipton-Martin Award for Marketing Excellence.

This change not only preserves the legacy of the late Max Tipton but also honors John Martin, the first recipient of the award in 1970 and a revered leader whose six-decade career shaped the very fabric of homebuilding marketing and strategy across Southern California and beyond.

“John Martin was a true legend in our industry,” said Larry Webb, The Webb Group. “His impact on master-planned communities, consumer-focused research, and mentoring the next generation of leaders was unmatched. The Tipton-Martin Award reflects the standard of excellence both men set through vision, dedication, and innovation.”

From humble beginnings working ten-hour shifts painting cars, Martin rose to pioneer strategic marketing for some of the region’s most influential homebuilding firms, including Mission Viejo Company, JM Peters, and William Lyon Homes. Known for integrating consumer insights into every facet of development, he helped shape many of Southern California’s most iconic communities. Beyond his professional achievements, Martin devoted decades to mentoring future leaders and sharing his influential “33 Guiding Principles” in classrooms at USC and UC Irvine Extension. Martin passed away on May 20, 2025.

The newly named Tipton-Martin Award for Marketing Excellence will continue to recognize individuals who demonstrate outstanding achievement, thought leadership, and a deep commitment to advancing the homebuilding industry through marketing.
The award will be presented under its new name for the first time at this year’s SoCal MAME Awards on November 8, 2025, marking a new chapter in honoring those who lead with purpose, passion, and integrity.
